Spring will soon be here and so will the dreaded flea season! Fleas are every pet owners nightmare.
I see people wondering about non-chemical treatments. Do they work? Yes, there is one that we only use. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth.
For DE (short for diatomaceous earth) to work you have to be consistent. We have a routine dusting schedule and use it as a preventative as well as during a flea infestation.
I like the fact that it is safe around humans and pets when used properly (you do need to be careful so you and your pets do not inhale it). DE can be used inside and outside the home. I encourage you to check out this website for more information. https://www.diatomaceousearth.com/blogs/learning-center
I refuse to use spot on treatments and pills for our pets. Poisoning our pets to poison the fleas does not make sense.
Over time fleas have begun to evolve and have become resistant to the chemicals used to get rid of them, so we need to find something fleas can’t do this with. DE works differently than poison; it cuts their exoskeleton, thus causing them to dehydrate.
To apply DE we use a honey bottle with a nozzle or we could use a
condiment squeeze bottle. We make a line from the neck down their back, rub into their fur; repeating in the stomach area. They will shake when you are done applying it.
Some people worry about the dust they shake off; we don’t. Our feral cats roll in the gravel road dust to do the same thing. That dust hasn’t bothered them yet.
Please do not let the fear of dust keep you from checking out this very versatile product. You will be surprised to discover how DE can be used in many other ways.
